The alchemist items are OK, and the versatility can come in handy, but the incredibly poor alchemist proficiency scaling just makes them have to work really hard for a moderate return at best. System mastery makes them less total garbage, but equivalent system mastery on any spellcaster still leaves the alchemist behind.

The Alchemist is one of my favorite classes (thematically) from both 1E and now from 2E, but they both feel VERY different. 1E was definitely a DPS class with a little bit of magical support for the party. 2E's Alchemist by comparison goes all-in on the support and utility aspects of the class.
